Public Relations Writing and Media Techniques

Getting Organized

Writing is composed of four components:

R-Research

P-Planning

C-Communictaion

E-Evaluation

Preparation for Writing: Do not just sit down and start writing without getting the tools to do it.

  • Need basic tools.- Ex. Computers, Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Stylebook,
  • RESEARCH!! – Make sure to have the right facts and know all the background information as well.
  • Outline the Purpose – What is the point that the reader should take away with them?

Writing: Things to keep in mind before and as a person writes.

  • Short Paragraphs
  • Word choices = reader friendly words
  • Active verbs and Present tense
  • Strong Imagery

Errors to Avoid: Things to look for before publishing final copy.

  • Spelling
  • Gobbledygook and Jargon
  • Poor Sentence Structure
  • Wrong Words
  • “Sound-alike” Words
  • Redundancies
  • Too many numbers
  • Hype
  • Stereotypes and Bias
  • Politically incorrect language
